Blogging would be so Easy… If You only knew What Your Reader was Thinking.
Wouldn’t It?
I mean think about it. Have you ever really tried to figure it out?
- What makes them subscribe to your RSS feed?
- What makes them unsubscribe?
- Do they give the blog a chance after they subscribe, or do they un-subscribe just as fast?
- What percentage of personal posts, informational post, affiliate links and the like is a mix that is pleasing to your reader?
- What kind of contests would help in reader participation?
- How often should a blogger post?
- Is there such a thing as too many posts, what about not enough?
- How long should the articles be?
If we knew the answer to these kinds of questions, it would make life so much easier wouldn’t it?
Counting myself as an “average” reader, I would say that when I run accross a new blog, if I see some good informational articles and some comments on the posts, I will go ahead and subscribe to the feed. I will also try and contribute in the comments if I feel I have something of value to say.
I generally don’t unsubscribe for too many reasons. I’ll go through and clean my reader out maybe once a month. Blogs that I notice I’m just not interested in reading, I will delete. I will also delete a blog if they are spammy or offer too many affiliate links and adverts.
I wonder about other readers. I notice that my own feed count can fluctuates quite a bit. What makes a reader unsubscribe? I’m curious about these things… aren’t you?
One way to find out is to ask of course. And to that end, I will be updating my poll questions to have something more closely related to what readers want out of a blog.
In fact, I’ve already added a new poll question in the sidebar, “What is your biggest Pet Peeve about Blogs?” If I don’t have an answer that suites you, please leave a comment on this post or on my about page.
Expect the Best,

I wish before they unsubscribe they had to tell you why they are unsubscribing. I watch my subscribers go and up and down. It is frustrating. You have no idea what they are looking for in your posts or why they subscribed in the first place.
Perhap if someone could invent an exit survey when you unsubscribe may give us all better answers. Is there such a thing? anna www.green-talk.com

Best way to find out what they think or how, is to test and ask.
But, many readers also don’t speak their mind.

Hi Anna - I agree with you. I would be so helpful. I’m not saying that we can please everyone, but maybe the reason they unsubscribe would be easy to fix. I think most bloggers would be willing to take a look atleast.
Hi YC - Hopefully I will get some takers on my poll question. I plan to leave them up for a month at a time.

I generally don’t unsubscribe either. Maybe if I am feeling overwhelmed then I will try to “clean house”. But my blog reader is not usually the source of my frustration - I will attack my mountains of paperwork first!

I hear ya Neena. I’ve only recently been using bloglines and I’m really enjoying it. Things are organized, easy to find, and if I don’t feel like looking at that blog it’s not hurting anything to just stay put for the most part.
You get those paperwork mountains too eh?

I generally don’t unsubscribe either.
Starting a poll was a great idea!

Hope I get some response from it. Maybe we will all learn the big secret LOL
