Daily Posts. Are you wasting your time?

How crucial is making a daily post to the overall success of your blog?

In the past, my goal was to post a new blog each and every day. If not a minimum of 5 days each week.

Sometimes that is very difficult.

I like to put up content that is going to bring some kind of value, but some days it felt like I was just blogging about anything and everything just to put up that daily post. And of course one of the ‘golden’ rules of a successful blog is Quality Content.

blogging
The reason that I’m asking if it’s a waste of valuable time, is because of the recent break I had to take from Home with Heather.Let’s take a look at mu numbers the last 3 months of the year:

  • In October, I posted 35 new posts. I had 3882 unique visitors, and 97 RSS subscribers.
  • In November, I posted 24 new posts. I had 7726 unique visitors, and 81 RSS subscribers.
  • In December, I post 3 new posts. I had 2940 unique visitors, and over 90 (don’t have the exact number) RSS subscribers.

The variance in those numbers is huge! But the number of visitors and subscribers are really not in accordance with the numbers of posts I did.

In October, I pushed out 35 posts and only had 3800 visitors. The number of visitors in November almost doubled with a huge decrease in daily posts, while in December I still had a great amount of traffic for only having 3 posts.

It really makes me stop and think that posting everyday is not the best way to spend my time.

Dosh Dosh reached 10 000 RSS subscribers recently. Maki gave 8 things that he accredits to making it to that 10 000 mark. One of them was infrequent posting. He says this:

No Frequent Posting. For the later part of Dosh Dosh’s lifespan, I wrote infrequently, sometimes only publishing one or two articles in an entire week.

Hmm… maybe there’s something to this. :?

If the number of visitors and RSS subscribers does not depend on the amount of posting one does in a given month, what does it depend on? And how can we increase the numbers without going crazy on posting? In February, I will have a goal of posting 15 different articles on Home with Heather ( I will be posting more on my other blogs). Of course, I’ll do some tracking and recording so that the results can be reported back to you.

Admittedly my numbers for January have (to this point) taken a bit of dive. I’ve really spent very little time on all blogging activities this month.

What will I do with my extra time in an effort to get those numbers back up? Subscribe to my feed below so you don’t miss the game plan. ;)

    Hey Heather,

I can’t speak from experience because my blog has no goals when it comes to generating traffic or the number of rss subscribers. I blog about my journey and anything cool that I want to mention. If I have one visitor or 10,000 it doesn’t matter to me because the blog is not online for that purpose. If someone is interested in what I have to say, they are more than welcome to subscribe to my rss feed, but if not, no worries.

In saying that, I do believe that there’s a balance to be had. I think the key to a successful blog is posting 3-5 times a week. That’s if your blog has a goal of generating more traffic and getting more rss subscribers and provided you have something useful to say! :)

I have at least 50-60 blogs in my rss reader that I keep up to date on what’s going on. The blogs that I tend to enjoy the most are the ones that don’t post every day. I find that more often a blogger posts the less I read their blog (unless it’s really good).

I have one blog in my reader that provides good information, but posts WAY too much. I’m talking 3-4 posts a day. At first I used to read them all, but now I rarely read anything the blog posts. I’ll skim the titles, but that’s it.

Some people say to decide on a schedule but is that really necessary? I personally don’t think so. As long as you keep in touch with your rss subscribers and provide good information that they want to read, then the trend will only increase.

    Hi,

I think it’s only necessary so long as you have something worthwhile to say, blogging about nothing interesting is never going to get you regular readers.

I may have 10 posts on the go in drafts and only post one when I think it’s worth using!

    Just my two cents!

Here’s what I saw happen on my software development blog. I posted just about daily on it from July 2007 until October. During that time it went from zero to just over 500 unique visitors a day. I stopped posting on it regularly when I started my new blog. However, due to the search engine traction it had obtained, the unique visitor count still remains close to 500 a day.

On OpTempo I still try to have a good post every day since I don’t think that it has either search engine or social networking traction yet.

I have been debating this concept as well. I have been an avid daily poster ~ mostly because I think if I post less I’ll get lazy and not post at all. I have heard some pretty good arguments for posting 3 or 4 times a week including; it gives people more of a chance to bookmark/digg your posts before they get buried. People have more of a chance to read posts before they get buried. I have noticed more traffic from those sources since I stopped posting every day.

    Just my 2 cents.
