I’ve been trying to figure it out for months…
What is the secret to getting more RSS subscribers?
I’ve tried different methods, and though the number of subscribers to my blog is increasing, it’s doing it very slowly.
My traffic is increasing, quite a bit actually. So what’s the difference in getting traffic and getting subscribers?
I think the answer may be quite simple. Many people are not yet using RSS. I know my offline friends don’t really even have a clue as to what it is. Surfers that are accustomed to hearing the words are typically in the same niche that this blog is about… Internet marketing. They know what RSS is and are doing every thing they can to increase their own subscriptions.
Others? Well I think they are still using bookmarking as a way to save their favorite blogs and websites. I think this is true because I’ve talked to some of them (off line friends). They don’t know what RSS is, and frankly it’s scary to them. They have me bookmarked in a nice safe spot, where they know what to click and it’s all easy for them.
When I look at my stats, 68% of my visitors are from direct address or book marks. So it doesn’t mean that my visitors aren’t returning, it just means they aren’t using RSS to do it.
So you know what that makes me think? I’m not going to bust my ass trying to increase subscribers.
All my readers are very important to me, whether you come to Home with Heather through a bookmark, a direct link, RSS feed, or whether you just randomly found me. I’m glad you’re here. And love to see you keep coming back.
For those that do need some education on the benefits of using an RSS feed. Take a look at this great video put out by the Common Craft show back in April of this year.
RSS isn’t scary. It will save you huge amounts of time. It is addictive to add blogs and sites that you like into your reader. All you then have to do is grab your coffee in the morning, open your reader, and scroll up and down to see what new and interesting things you want to read about.Easy.I like to use Bloglines as my reader, although I’m sure any of them are just as good. To get a free account with bloglines. Go Here. Follow the simple instructions to set up your free account.Once your account has been created it is simply a matter of going to your favorites blogs and websites, and subscribing to the feed. At Home with Heather, I have a really big orange button at the top of my sidebar. Just click on that. Or, you can click on the link at the end of each and every article.
Bloglines also allows you to set up categories so that it’s easier to organize you favorites sites. It’s really cool.
Hope that helps.
As I said earlier. All of my readers are important to me. But coming to visit through and RSS reader will save you valuable time. Just a thought.
Expect the Best,

Heather,
I have to agree with you. I have gotten so used to RSS that I forget not everybody uses it. I try to push subscribing by email as well. My sister just subscribed to my email feed and commented on how much she liked getting the posts in her inbox.

I’m one of those people that have bookmarked your blog and visit it regularly. I don’t like subscribing via RSS or email, simply because I need to enjoy the look&feel of the websites that I visit. I’m an addictive surfer and when I visit a website, I not just read the latest post, but also end up reading up a lot of other old posts, archives, comments section, other people’s blogs that are mentioned in the blogroll, etc. But of course, not everyone has all the time in the world like I do, so the busier lot prefer things the email or RSS way.

Heather, I am still confused about this rrs subscribers stuff, it takes me a bit to catch on I guess even with a video :).
For the fun of it I just joined google reader to try it and added one blog. I couldn’t see the comments posted though. Am I supposed to be able to see comments posted by others?
Thanks in advance

Heather,
One thing that help is to add a page where you explain what RSS is and then add it to your sidebar right above the Subscribe option. Education helps as my own stats have shown and my blog subscription been increasing steadily …
