What Makes You Leave a Blog Comment?

I’m curious.

Do you only comment if something really pisses you off you have a strong opinion about the subject? Are you one of those “Nice post” commenters? Do you only comment after someone has left a comment for you?

I was reading an article by Ian Fernando entitled “Comments: Why its Important in the Blogosphere” It’s a good read. Talks about the reasons commenting is so important and what you as a blogger can do to increase the number of comments you get on your blog.

Some bloggers don’t even open it up for comments on their blog at all. What do you think about that?

I don’t always comment. In fact, I probably don’t even comment on 10% of post I read.

I am making a real effort to leave some comments on blogs I enjoy DAILY and I’ll tell you why…

  • I think it’s important to let the author know you appreciate their work, give them some kudos. If a blog catches my eye, makes me smile, shares with me some good information, or if I like the blogger or what they’re about. I want to comment them.
  • It starts a real sense of community. For example - I always visit the blog of someone who has left me a comment. I like to check their blog. I’ve met some great people that way.
  • When you post a comment on a blog, you often get a link out of it. Especially if that blog has a no no follow policy.
  • Ian talked about commenting being a part of Web 2.0 and I really agree with him. It does form a bond between the reader/blogger. Forming relationships is a must if you want to play and stay in the game.
  • Commenting on blogs will help bring traffic to your site.
  • I like getting comments. OK I confess, I do. ;) The way to get more comments is to give more comments.

When you do comment someone, make sure the comment is worth reading…puleeezz don’t just say “Hi - I like that post”. Keep your comment relevant to the information being shared in the post.

Add value to the post with your comment. That doesn’t mean you have to agree with everything. But maybe your disagreement will spark a debate or fuel a discussion.

If you are leaving a website link in you info, why not do some deep linking to a relevant post that you’ve done instead of just giving your domain address. This may help spark more of a discussion and give some relevant information to other readers.

I’m going to say that I will personally post atleast 3 comments each day (when I’m not out at the lake ;) ). What about you?? Do you want to kind of make it a challenge?

What about when you get comments…

What do you do with them?

Give and you Shall Receive - TrackBacking | Ian Fernando

[…] For example, HomeWithHeather recently trackback a post I created yesterday as well as OptiNiche on a controversial issue. By simply trackbacking to other blogs and getting noticed, you create a curiosity for the author. Most likely they will visit your blog to see what was written about them. Its human curiosity that makes us do this. […]

All the blogging gurus says that leaving comments is a big factor in increasing blog traffic, especially when you are just starting out. So I have adopted a personal commenting policy that I really try to enforce on myself - if I take the time to read a blog post, then I always try to leave a comment. Sometimes I am pressed for time, or really have nothing to say, but for the most part I try to comment actively.

    Hi Neena,

I try to comment back as much as I can. It is a big factor plus I like to get to know people who are actually reading what I post :)

Sorry it took so long, I’ve been on vacation.

In the message forum world, they also have problems with a “nice post” or what they call “giving thanks”. So some message forums are now using a plugin that allows a user to click on a “thanks” (or thumbs up) rather than wasting web real estate with a comment. They also have groans (or thumbs down).

This can also serve as a way to weed out spam or offensive comments. You can flag comments with certain # of “groans” and hide them until you can moderate them.

Now the question is if this idea will spread to blogs or not?

I’m not so much of a commenter. What makes me leave comments? Sometimes I just like the personality, the tone of the “voice” of the author, some other times I just feel like sharing a similar experience with the one described in a post… or I simply feel like writing, and I’m not in the mood to write a post on my own blog. I’ve read a lot of advice from pros that leaving comments on other blogs is good for your traffic. Maybe for a traffic of less that 100 visits per day it is true. After your blog grows, you suddenly notice that commenting and blog carnivals submissions are just drops in the ocean, so you decide to treat them as a pleasure, and not a must.

Briefly, I comment because and when I have a pleasure to do so :)

    Hi Simonne,

    Welcome :)

I wasn’t much of a commenter either, it’s something I’m really trying to get into. I still don’t leave a comment on every blog I visit. I certainly will if I have something to contribute to the conversation.

I have made a new goal to comment on every blog that comments on mine.. It’s the “iRELPY” movement! I’ll go through the persons blog until I find a relevant subject I can comment on. The short “nice post” comments are nice but you can tell the person didn’t read the post…

I always make time to reply to my readers… They are the livelihood of my blog!

Talina’s last blog post..Payperpost, Google, page rank and the debate.

    Hi Bliss and Welcome :D

I love to read other blogs as well to see what’s new and what they are talking about. Time is the biggest factor isn’t it, somedays I feel like I could just stay in my PJ’s with a great cup of coffee and read blogs ALL day. Unfortunately I never get that chance :(
